Training Program
Introductory Course
Hang Gliding WA's chief instructor is approved and fully qualified by the SAFA, the controlling body of the sport in Australia. He has over 35 years experience in the sport and began instructing in 1983.
The basic course runs over two days and is conducted in Perth. Take off and low level flight skills are covered during this time, ensuring you are ready for the next phase of instruction... high flight!
The Full Training Program
Hang Gliding WA's training program is a nine day course running over 5 weekends.
Theory nights are included as part of the following training guide.
Day 1 - Ground training - Includes basic take off, landing and low level glides.
Day 2/3 - Initial towing phase - Location ... York area. Pilots are towed gently above the ground, slowly increasing height as confidence increases.
Day 4/5 - High tow phase - Increased height, flight times and increased skill training.
Day 6/7 - Consolidation phase - Consolidation of all skill training. Thermalling and higher flights (weather depending).
Day 8/9 - Final Assessment - The culmination of the training program. ‘Solo’ flights, extended flight times and final skills assessment.
Qualifications
At the successful conclusion of your course, you will be qualified to receive the rating you have worked so hard for ... the SUPERVISED PILOT rating. In addition you will also be eligible for your TOW endorsement, absolutely FREE, as part of your training program.

The Hill Flyers - are based in Perth and fly regularly at the country town of York some 100km from the city. The club has been very active over the past few years and and enjoys a strong following of pilots. If you'd like to join or just talk to someone about hang gliding, contact the president Rick Williams on A/hrs:92943962.
Western Soarers - operate from the Perth area. This club has hosted the Australian Nationals in the past and has a number of active members today. You can contact members through the Hang Gliding WA Facebook page.
Geraldton Hang Gliding Club - operates about 500km from the Perth. Many good flying sights surround the sunny coastal town of Geraldton. Sights face almost all wind directions, making Geraldton an excellent flying area. Contact: Des Hill on 08 9921 6219.
Goldfields Dust Devils - is a small but very active club based in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia's oldest gold mining town. They can be contacted by emaildustdevils@hgfa.asn.au.
Albany Hang Gliding Club- Albany boasts many of WA's best coastal sites. The picturesque scenery and tranquil surroundings in some of the most remote hang gliding sites in Australia make this a favourite location for many Perth based flyers.
